Welcome to the Algona Cornbelt
Chorus website. The chorus is a member of the Barbershop Harmony
Society, formerly known as the Society for the Preservation and
Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA).
Located in the Central States District, the chorus has been small chorus
champions for 8 years before moving from A division to AA division. The
chorus took eighth place in 2003 competing against AA and AAA choruses.
Winners of second place at the Buckeye invitational in 2002 and a third
place finish at the Buckeye invitational in 2000, missing the gold by a
mere 8 points. The chorus was also the opening act for the legendary
Temptations at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA a few years ago.
The chorus is made up of 38 members
within a 40 mile radius of Algona. Kent Madison directs the chorus.
Practice is held every Wednesday evening, 7:30-9:30 at the Methodist Church,
201 E Nebraska, in Algona, IA in the Wesley room. Any gentleman with the talent and desire to sing harmony is
invited to practice.
The
Cornbelt Chorus presents a spring show each year and participates in
fall district contest. The chorus also has a Valentines Day fundraiser.
A quartet dressed in tuxedos will sing a song or two for the sender’s
sweetheart, present them with a rose and a Valentines Day card from the
sender. The chorus is available to perform at shows, events and special
meetings in Algona and the surrounding communities.
